A Woman In a Man's World of Racing

Fiona Keating

Like many forms of Motorsport, Drag Racing may be seen by many as a male dominated sport. Not so says female drag racer Fiona Keating.

One of Australia's fastest women, Fiona has raced right across Australia mixing it with the best men and women of the sport. The Bendigo Bank Community Development Officer says "our sport is not gender specific. There's no advantages or disadvantages. Women can go just as fast or faster than the men!"

If it's speed, power, thrills and excitement you're after Fiona has just the thing. Her adrenaline pumping Methanol dragster with a 352 cubic inch small block Chevrolet rattles some cages. Imagine being strapped into a adrenaline pumping Methanol burning, 700 horsepower dragster pumping out speeds over 250km/h - it's all in a days work for Fiona. Piloting her Kincrome dragster, Fiona tears down the straight in a matter of seconds.

Born and breed into Motorsport, Fiona has been involved in the sport from a young age with her family involved in Top Fuel when she was young. Throughout the years, Fiona has worked as a co-crew chief with one of Australia's most respected and oldest family drag racing teams, Reed Racing. Both Steve and Debbie Reed have been very active in the Top Alcohol sport for many years. Working together since 2003, Fiona and Steve and Debbie's son Daniel Reed collected the Australian Supercharged Outlaws Championship in 2007.

Looking to expand her passion for drag racing, in 2007 Fiona established Keating Motorsport, marking the start of her own professional drag racing career. Still running the first car purchased by the team in early 2007, Fiona has quickly found her feet and is proving she has what it takes to manoeuvre the 8 second dragster down the quarter mile.

Now located in Queensland, Fiona and her Kincrome Drag Racing Team currently race in all the major national meets, competing across Australia including the ANDRA Drag Racing Championships in Sydney and the famous Willowbank track in Queensland. Racing at the recent Winternationals in Ipswich, the field included 49 women which was the largest number of women competitors in a drag race meeting outside North America.

Title sponsor, professional quality tools brand Kincrome is proud to support Fiona and to be associated with Keating Motorsport.

"We are pleased to partner Fiona and Keating Motorsport. Fiona is dedicated to her sport and we know her passion will drive her to great success." said Marketing Manager Brad Priest.

After losing at the recent Winternationals by 0.06 of a second and causing some big upsets in elimination rounds this year, Fiona is now focused on the future, setting her sights on the next racing series and quietly aspiring to race in the Top Fuel series.

"We're looking at coming back next year and making it bigger and better" says Fiona.

Fiona and the Kincrome Drag Racing Team will compete at the 09/10 ANDRA National Drag Racing Championships series starting in Willowbank Raceway in Queensland on August 8th & 9th 2009.
